Serrie C. Lico, MD comes to us after spending the last ten years at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania.  He is a 45 year old, board certified cardiothoracic surgeon, who trained in New York and has been in practice for the past twelve years.  While at Geisinger he has been a high volume surgeon, Dr. Serrie C. Lico, MD Buffaloperforming over 200 cases a year, with his case load being a majority of sicker patients.  His practice has involved all aspects of adult cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Serrie was born in the Bronx and grew up in the suburbs of New York City.  After completing his medical school education at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania he came back to New York for his residency.  He trained with premier surgeons in Westchester County, New York City and Long Island.  After completing all his specialty training he went into private practice in Tucson, Arizona for two years.  Although he loved the southwest he moved back East to Pennsylvania in order to be closer to family and friends.  He was recruited by Geisinger Medical Center where he has practiced for the past 10 years.

His results are the best in the state of Pennsylvania according to the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (www.phc4.org), which evaluates surgeons and hospitals.  In their last online report from September 2008 the state average 30-day mortality for CABG was 2.4%.  Dr. Lico was found to have a statistically significant below average 30-day mortality rate for CABG (lowest 2.5%) with a 4.5 day length of stay.  He is extremely proficient at the art of off pump CABG and able to perform all of his coronary revascularizations without cardiopulmonary bypass. His results for valvular surgery are equally as excellent with a length of stay equal to 6.3 days.

Dr. Lico is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Pennsylvania Association of Thoracic Surgery, and a fellow of the International College of Surgeons.  He has participated in multiple humanitarian missions in Africa as a member of the Ethiopian North American Health Professionals Association (ENAHPA).  He performed valve surgery for patients with rheumatic heart disease while teaching local surgeons in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  Dr. Lico was also commended by the Suez Canal University Hospital in Ismailia, Egypt.  There he performed off pump coronary bypass surgery also while teaching local surgeons the basic techniques of the procedure. 

Dr. Lico is enthusiastic about the potential for growth in the Catholic Health System.

Nicole M. Ryan, RN, ANP, is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support and Emergency Pediatric Nursing. She is registered by the New York Nicole M. Ryan R.N. | SURGXL | BuffaloState Educational Department as both a Professional Nurse and a Family Nurse Practitioner.

After graduating with a B.A. in Health and Human Services from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Ms. Ryan obtained a B.S. in Nursing and an M.S. as a Family Nurse Practitioner from D'Youville College in Buffalo. She completed her post-graduate training in the Telemetry Unit and Trauma Intensive Care Unit at Erie County Medical Center.

Ms. Ryan has also had clinical experience in Pediatrics at the Jericho Road Family Practice in Buffalo, in Women's Health at Burns M.D. & Hage, M.D. Obstetrics & Gynecology in Niagara Falls, and in Adult Medicine at ECMC and the Jericho Road Family Practice in Buffalo.

Currently, Ms. Ryan joins Dr. Bell-Thomson and SURGXL at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, while maintaining privileges at ECMC.

Alyson L. Nyitrai, RPA-C is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, and New York State Infection Control.  She is registered by the New York State Education Department as a Professional Physician Assistant.
 
After obtaining a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology from SUNY Geneseo, Ms. Nyitrai decided to further her education by enrolling in the Physician Assistant BS/MS program at D'Youville College of Buffalo.
 
Ms. Nyitrai completed several rotations during graduate school, including cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, primary care, psychology and pediatrics.  Following the completion and presentation of her graduate research project, Ms. Nyitrai graduated Summa Cum Laude.
 

Ms. Nyitrai has joined Dr. Bell-Thomson in his practice of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo.
